ONGOING RESEARCH SUPPORT
1. "Growth factor signaling pathways in mouse palatogenesis"

The goal of this project is to study the role of growth factors including BMPs, Shh and FGFs in mammalian palatogenesis. Particularly function of these factors in establishing 3-dimentional development of the mouse palate is the main focus of this project.

2. “Molecular Mechanisms of Left-right Asymmetry”

The goal of this project is to study the molecular mechanisms of embryonic left-right asymmetry and cardiac looping. Particularly we will focus on the role of a transcriptional repressor Pcl2 in the establishment of left-right asymmetry using chick and mouse as model systems.

3. “De Novo Generation of Mammalian Tooth from Stem Cells”
PI: YiPing Chen        Agency: NIH

The goal of this project is to induce bone marrow stromal cells to become odontogenic, and establish methodology to assembly tooth in vitro from stem cells.

4. "Molecular Mechanisms of Vertebrate Tooth Initiation"
PI: YiPing Chen           Agency: NIH
Type: 2 R01 DE12329        Period: 2/1/04 - 1/31/09
The goal of this project is to continue the studies the role of BMP and Wnt signaling pathways in mammalian tooth initiation. Experiments using in vitro tissue recombination, organ culture, conditional gene knockout, gene knockdown via RNAi, and transgenic mice, will be performed.

5. “A New Strategy to Assess Gene Function in Tooth Formation”

The goal of this project is to establish a methodology for large scale screen of gene function in mammalian tooth development using virus-mediated RNA interference.

6. “Shox2 in mammalian craniofacial development”

Period: 8/1/05 – 7/31/06 (no cost extension to 7/31/07)
The goal of this pilot project is to study the role of the homeobox gene Shox2 in mammalian craniofacial development and its potential regulation by microRNA.

7. “Emergency aid for recovery of NIH supported research after Hurricane Katrina”

This is an emergency aid from the NIH to cover some of the losses of perishable reagents in the Chen lab during Hurricane Katrina and to provide immediate help for the recovery of the Chen lab’s research program supported by the NIH.
